We are a family of holiday traditions.
Independence Day is the one exception, it seems.
We have done something different every year for it and neither of our families have strong traditions for the day either.
Two years ago, we were in Los Angeles for fireworks.
Last year, we stayed at a beach house in Lincoln City with some friends and watched fireworks over the ocean.
This year, we kept it more local.
(and unlike my usual self, I hardly took any photos, but I’ll share the few that I did take!)
On the 3rd, we were invited to our friends’ house for dinner and to join them (and the whole rest of our church gang) at the Oregon Gardens in Silverton for the fireworks show.
I’d never been to the Oregon Gardens before (except for the fireside lounge for ladies’ night after church on Sat nights, so every time I went, it was already dark). We explored the beautiful gardens a bit, checked out the chicken coop (which Zeek loved and “bak bak’d” at forever), and shared some food from the vendors.
We sat up on the hill with our group of friends and watched the awesome fireworks display once the sun went down. I wasn’t sure how Zeek would do, since last year he was only 5 months old on the 4th. We had bought those “pop-it”, throw on the ground snapping “fireworks” for Zeek a few days ago and he HATED them. Like, cried, pulled his arms close to his body and backed away scared. Skyler has really sensitive ears, so we weren’t sure if this was the reason for his dislike…but either way, I was a little nervous how he would do with the big boomin’ fireworks.
Unlike what I would have imagined, he not only liked them and watched them, but they almost relaxed him to the point of making him fall asleep in daddy’s arms…which is completely unheard of if there are people around him.
It was so sweet. 🙂
On the 4th, we doddled around a little too long before deciding to go to the St. Paul Rodeo. We didn’t get there in time to be able to purchase tickets to the rodeo (which also gives kids free pony rides and wagon rides for the hour before the show)… next year. 🙂 But we walked around the vendors, had some food, looked at the animals through the gates, and took Zeek on his first ferris wheel ride!
After the rodeo, we went back to the house, where Zeek conked out for a 3 hour nap! I know, lots of kids do this. Zeek is not one of them. On a good day, I get an hour and a half out of him. Heck, on a good day, I get an hour. No joke. He’s a 20-45 min napper usually. So this three hour nap was 1.) awesome and 2.) boring. We wanted to do something on this beautiful day…but, we were stuck inside. 🙂
Once he woke up at 6, it was time to go to Grandpa and Grandma Anderson’s house for BBQ and fireworks with family and friends.
Zeek playing with one of his bff’s – his cousin Lincoln.
Skyler and his baby brother Logan being really good examples to the little boys…
Daddy and Zeek watching the neighbors
awesome illegal fireworks.
Seriously. Oregon is the lamest place for fireworks. Nothing over 6 ft.
Next year, Washington. 🙂
The next day, my friend Jessica and I met up at the Riverfront Park for a picnic and playing in the fountain! It was such a beautiful day and so nice to get out!
Notice Zeek’s tongue is out???
And he’s getting closer to the water?
Sprayed in the face! Ouch.
We ran into some other friend’s who had the same idea to play in the fountain!
Zeek with his buddy Isaac.
And my friend Jessica’s sweet girl Azri!
We’ve had a fun time in the sunshine this week. 🙂
I think Oregon’s summer has officially arrived.
About dang time.
Gonna go out and enjoy it some more!
P.S. I have my second appointment with my midwife today. I get to actually hear the heartbeat this time! Last appt., I was only 7 weeks and my uterus was too low still. So looking forward to this. I promise I’ll give a pregnancy update next week, now that I’ll have some new information, instead of just telling you I’m sick. 😉 Also…maybe some belly shots. For those of you who have been asking.
I haven’t taken any this pregnancy, unlike my weekly ones with Zeek…even though I’ve been showing since about 9 weeks! It’s just been weird with not knowing exactly how far along I am… which I’ll tell ya more about next week. 🙂
Have an awesome weekend, friends!
